Abstract
The article is the first contemporary attempt of the comprehensive study of the remnants of the so-called Ligurian language spread in northern Italy and south-eastern France in antiquity, which is known from glosses and onomastics. Although some scholars nowadays argue that Ligurian in fact is a form of Early Celtic, it is shown that the data at our disposal allows us to differentiate between two languages and Ligurian should not be considered as a language of the “para-Celtic circle”. It is also argued that the theory which places (Indo-European) Ligurian between Italic languages and Celtic in fact has no grounds.
