Abstract
A research monograph based that makes a new contribution to the way we conceptualise the creation and replication of public urban cultures in the Victorian town. It tackles a neglected theme in nineteenth-century British urban history, the persistence of ritual acts in modern urban contexts. The research on contrasting towns in south Wales is located in the context of international research on this theme, esp. stemming from North America and continental Europe. It is an original contribution to Welsh and British urban history and should be used as a reference point for further studies in Britain and elsewhere.
