Neil has a BSc in Computer Science (1994) from the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth. Before taking his current position, he has worked in the department for several years, focusing on work with the commercial sector in Wales. Through his work in the Centre for Advanced Software and Intelligent Systems (CASIS), he has experience of developing systems that work with custom hardware, desktop based systems and database driven web server applications.

He has experience of teaching commercial and academic courses, and he has taught modules for the University in Aberystwyth and in Singapore. As part of Software Alliance Wales (SAW), he taught Welsh SMEs to program the iPhone.

He has worked in two small software development companies; in particular he was a director of a spin-out software company that developed research from within the department. He is a member of BCS, the Chartered Institute for IT, and is on the committee for the Mid-Wales sub-branch of BCS.
