Official Website Launch for 'Journey to the Past: Wales in Historic Travel Writing from France and Germany' at the Digital Past 2018 conference organised by the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales. The website presents nine themed trails to locations across Wales and combines the latest digital technology, such as a Virtual Reality experience of nineteenth-century Tintern Abbey, with historic travel writing in French, German, English and Welsh.

For centuries, continental Europeans have come to Wales for numerous reasons. During the Romantic period some came seeking a rural idyll, whilst others in the Victorian era travelled as industrial spies, and during times of war many refugees escaped to Wales to find shelter from persecution. Not only have continental Europeans left their traces among the people of Wales by settling here, but they have also written extensively about their experiences in diaries, letters, books and magazines or novels. Follow along nine themed trails and discover Wales, its culture and people in an entirely new way. Through the eyes of these historical travellers, experience the country like you have never done before. Explore an ivy-covered Tintern Abbey, marvel at the fiery night-sky of Merthyr Tydfil and fall in love with some very unusual Ladies in Llangollen.
