Since the end of the Cold War, regional stability in the Caucasus has proved an elusive goal. Ethnic and territorial disputes, competition over resources and the ‘weak state syndrome’ have all taken their toll on the new nations' attempts to establish long term security. Göl argues that this should be a much greater cause of concern for NATO, the US, Russia and the EU.
